Mid Essex NUT Meetings

We normally hold fiveGeneral Meetings per year, including the AGM in February.

We also hold a Meeting for School Representatives in July, designed to help Reps in their day to day union work, and a Welcome Function for teachers new to the area in September.

January Meeting 2002

This was held on 14th January at Hedley Walter High School in Brentwood.
Members chose the Conference motions they thought most important to them for discussion at Conference which this year will be held at Bournemouth.
All Associations send their choices to Hamilton House and once these have been collated those getting the most votes in each section will be shown in that order for discussion on the final agenda.

Later Jerry Glazier spoke about the effect the New Education Bill will have on schools. He stated that at the end of their 5 years Education Action Zones would be phased out. He also said that Essex LEA is currently interviewing private firms who could take over the provision of services for schools currently undertaken by the LEA. The advantages of this to the LEA or to schools is far from clear at the moment

The Annual General Meeting

Secretary's Report to the AGM on 13th February 2002 This is my 6th annual report. In the last year we have held 5 General Meetings in addition to the AGM, with subjects ranging from the General Teaching Council, Workload and Bureaucracy, the New Education Bill, to How to use a digital camera and design a webpage. Because of the wide geographic area we cover, meetings are spread throughout the region. It is increasing difficult to attract audiences to meetings and one hesitates to invite speakers from out of the County to come and speak to a handful of people. Any suggestions to solve this problem and indeed to suggest subjects that will be of interest to our members would be of value. We also held our annual meetings for school representatives and the Welcome Function for newly appointed teachers. Again in spite of personally addressed invitations to over 100 NQT's very few responded even to say " No thank you". Nevertheless it was an enjoyable evening. There are always changes in membership due to change of schools etc., however membership continues to grow being 1122 at the end of 2001 and since then we have gained another dozen members. We also have an increasing number who are not based full time in schools. I now send out close to 200 newsletters, notification of meetings etc to individual addresses. 5 Newsletters have been sent to all members. The purchase of a digital camera has made it possible to include photographs both in the newsletters and on the website. A decision was made at the June meeting to purchase enough copies of Education Review to send to all schools. There were one or two hiccups!! The spring edition arrived during the summer holidays. I managed to persuade headquarters that to send this out in the autumn term would not look good. In consequence we in effect got that issue free and it was to go out with the new format due for publication in October. That edition arrived well into January. Both were sent together for comparison and comment plus a pro-forma to request receipt of the next edition. So far very few have been returned so some schools will be receiving large number of copies next time. My thanks go to the committee Jerry Glazier and to John Dixon and Hilary Bucky of Regional office for help both with meetings and with individual case work. Marion Wilson 20/2/2002
